The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the provisional results for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates. This year, a total of 460,611 candidates participated in the examination, comprising 212,954 males and 247,657 females, from 1,003 schools across Ghana. This examination is a critical milestone for students, as it determines their eligibility for further studies in tertiary institutions or for entry into the workforce.
While the release of the results has been met with excitement by many students who have passed and are ready to pursue their next academic or professional endeavors, WAEC has also had to address several irregularities that were detected during the examination process. As part of its commitment to upholding the integrity of the examination, WAEC has taken significant action against candidates found to be in violation of the examination rules.
A total of 4,108 candidates had their subject results cancelled for engaging in malpractice by introducing foreign materials, such as prepared notes, textbooks, and printed materials, into the examination halls. This kind of malpractice is taken very seriously by WAEC, as it undermines the fairness and integrity of the examination process. In addition to this, the entire results of 483 candidates were annulled after they were found to have brought mobile phones into the examination halls. The use of mobile phones during the examination is strictly prohibited, as it can facilitate cheating and other forms of dishonesty.
Moreover, WAEC has withheld the results of 781 candidates for specific subjects and the entire results of 209 others due to various suspected offences. These candidates will have to wait until further investigations are completed to determine the status of their results. In a more concerning development, the results from 319 schools have been withheld due to suspected collusion among candidates. WAEC is currently conducting investigations into these allegations, and the outcomes of these inquiries will determine whether the results of the affected schools will be released.
WAEC has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a fair and transparent examination process, and it has urged candidates to remain vigilant against fraudsters who might attempt to offer services to alter results for a fee. The council has emphasized that any such promises are fraudulent, and students are advised to use the official WAEC results verification system to authenticate their results.
For candidates seeking detailed information about their results or who wish to verify their scores, they are encouraged to visit WAEC’s official website at www.waecgh.org. It is important that all students remain cautious and ensure their academic achievements are accurately reflected through the official channels provided by WAEC. This move by WAEC reinforces the need for academic integrity and serves as a deterrent to any future attempts to compromise the examination system.
