Tinkler Reflects on Cape Town City's Narrow Loss to AmaZulu
Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler expressed disappointment following his team’s 1-0 defeat to AmaZulu in the Betway Premiership on Sunday. Despite a strong second-half performance, City failed to overturn the early deficit caused by Pule Eckstein’s 19th-minute goal. The loss marked the end of their unbeaten home record this season and saw AmaZulu leapfrog them into 11th place in the standings.
“Obviously two very different halves,” Tinkler commented post-match. “In the first half, we knew they commit a lot of players in attack. We worked on our defensive setup in training, but we didn’t execute. They created chances and scored, although we also had opportunities during the moments we played well.”
City struggled with transitions, often being caught out after their own attacking moves. “We were always late for the ball in behind. Most of their chances came from us losing possession rather than them building from the back,” Tinkler noted.
The second half saw a more spirited performance from City, yet their attacking inefficiencies persisted. “It was much better after the break, but the final pass was missing,” Tinkler lamented. “They put in two crosses and created chances. I can’t recall us getting on the end of any of ours despite numerous attempts. That’s the difference.”
City’s offensive struggles have been evident this season, with only six league goals scored, making them the fourth-lowest scorers in the league. “Finding goals has been a challenge,” Tinkler admitted. “We work extensively on it, but on match days, we’re not delivering the final product needed to win games.”
Despite the loss, Tinkler praised his players’ determination. “In the second half, they didn’t drop their heads. They kept pushing until the end. We created enough to at least get an equalizer, though they still troubled us on the counterattack.”
He concluded, “There’s a lot of work to be done to get out of this position. We need to regroup and address our shortcomings, especially in attack, to turn things around.”
