The Order of the Volta: Safeguarding Ghana's Highest Honor.

The Order of the Volta, one of Ghana's most prestigious awards, has a rich history dating back to 1960. Established by Kwame Nkrumah, the award was initially reserved for exceptional achievements that inspired the nation and transcended borders. During Nkrumah's tenure, the award was given only once, to Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space.

However, in recent years, the trend has shifted, with presidents awarding the Order of the Volta more liberally, often to their own appointees. This raises concerns about the politicization of the award and its potential erosion of value.

Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, a private legal practitioner, argues that while there are valid reasons for recognizing appointees' contributions, such decisions must be made with caution. Awarding appointees may appear biased, raising questions about impartiality. Furthermore, such awards risk being viewed as self-congratulatory or acts of political patronage, undermining their credibility.

To preserve the prestige of the Order of the Volta, it is essential to establish a formal process for granting national awards. This process should ensure transparency, with clear criteria rooted in measurable achievements. An independent body should assess nominations, eliminating the potential for executive influence and maintaining impartiality.

Awards for appointees should be limited to instances where their achievements significantly impact the nation, far exceeding their official duties and demonstrating exceptional leadership or innovation. Alternative forms of recognition, such as commendations or public acknowledgments, can be used to celebrate ministers' contributions without compromising the sanctity of national away.

In conclusion, the Order of the Volta is a sacred institution that deserves to be protected. While recognizing appointees' contributions is important, it must be done in a manner that safeguards the award's integrity and prestige. By establishing a transparent and impartial process, Ghana can ensure that the Order of the Volta remains a symbol of excellence and a source of national pride.
