The Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) has addressed the recent delays at Tema Port, citing technical challenges as the primary cause of disruptions in container delivery and evacuation. In a public announcement released on December 24, 2024, the GSA explained that scanner malfunctions at MPS Terminal 3, coupled with intermittent issues with the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS), have significantly hampered cargo clearance operations. These technical setbacks have resulted in severe bottlenecks, frustrating shippers and causing delays across the port.

The GSA expressed its deep concern over the situation and assured all stakeholders, including importers, exporters, and service providers, that it is actively working to resolve these issues. The authority emphasized that no shipper should bear the financial burden of delays caused by these systemic failures. It encouraged stakeholders to report any additional costs incurred as a result of these disruptions, stating that investigations will be conducted and reimbursements will be considered where necessary. This reassurance highlights the GSA's commitment to protecting the interests of shippers and ensuring fairness within the industry.

To mitigate further disruptions, the GSA has been collaborating with relevant stakeholders to repair the faulty scanners and stabilize the ICUMS. These efforts aim to restore operational efficiency at Tema Port, which is not only the busiest but also the most critical port in Ghana. The GSA stressed that resolving these technical issues is a priority, and that steps are being taken to ensure smoother operations moving forward.

The announcement, signed by Charles Darling Sey, the Eastern Zonal Manager, on behalf of the GSA's CEO, underscored the authority’s proactive approach in addressing the port’s operational challenges. The GSA also sent a goodwill message to all stakeholders, wishing them a peaceful and productive festive season. The authority reiterated its commitment to working closely with all parties involved to improve service delivery and maintain the integrity of Ghana’s shipping sector.

Through these ongoing interventions, the GSA aims to restore normalcy to Tema Port and ensure that the port continues to operate efficiently. By addressing the root causes of the delays and prioritizing the resolution of technical setbacks, the GSA is demonstrating its dedication to maintaining a robust and effective shipping ecosystem in Ghana. With these efforts, the GSA aims to safeguard the interests of shippers and contribute to the continued growth of Ghana's trade and maritime industry.
