Eddie Howe Praises Defensive Resilience After Newcastle’s Win at Old Trafford

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe attributed his team’s recent winning streak to their defensive improvements after a commanding 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday. The win marked Newcastle’s fourth consecutive Premier League triumph and extended their run of clean sheets to four matches, solidifying their place in fifth on the league table.

Return to Defensive Solidity

How highlighted his side's transformation from earlier in the season, where they struggled with early concessions. "Early in the season, we were on the other end of it by conceding early goals, and it makes such a difference," Howe said in a post-match interview with the BBC. "We gave ourselves mountains to climb at times, particularly on the road, and it is great to reverse it the last few games. Those goals have helped with momentum and confidence, and from that point, we have never looked back."

The Magpies’ defensive resolve has been evident, conceding just once in their last five matches across all competitions. Howe credited this turnaround to collective effort, singling out goalkeeper Martin Dubravka for his outstanding performance while emphasizing the contribution of the entire team. "Really pleased for Martin and the back line, the whole team really, for the clean sheet. Historically, we have prided ourselves on being strong defensively, and it is great to see us returning to that," he added.

### Key Contributions and Confidence Boost

Newcastle’s win was sealed early, with goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton within the first half. These early strikes proved vital, helping the team maintain momentum and confidence throughout the match. "Confidence is the ultimate thing that makes the difference," Howe noted. "The players are playing in their best positions and look happy and comfortable, and our injury record has also improved from last year."

 Eyes on Tottenham

With their sights set on continuing their upward trajectory, Newcastle will face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. A victory could bring them even closer to breaking into the top four, intensifying the competition for Champions League qualification.

Howe’s tactical adjustments and emphasis on defensive solidity have rejuvenated Newcastle’s campaign, positioning them as a formidable force in the Premier League.
