WAEC TAKES PROACTIVE STEPS TO RESOLVE WITHHELD RESULTS AMIDST 2024 WASSCE RELEASE

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced its commitment to resolving withheld results as quickly as possible, following the release of the 2024 WASSCE results. In a bid to expedite the process, WAEC has decided to recall its staff earlier than initially scheduled, with a new report date set for January 3, 2025.

According to John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, the decision to recall staff earlier is aimed at fast-tracking the scrutiny of withheld results. "This has been a very turbulent year for us, but we are taking steps to address the issues. By starting earlier, we can expedite the process and release results that are free of incriminating findings, enabling candidates to continue their academic pursuits," Mr. Kapi explained.

To facilitate the resolution process, WAEC plans to decentralize its operations, holding discussions with candidates involved in withheld results cases at its regional offices. While this approach has proven effective in the past, it presents logistical and financial challenges, including the need for staff to travel across the country. "Our officers would have to travel to various regional offices to meet with candidates, which comes with significant financial implications. We will require financial assistance to ensure this exercise is carried out successfully," Mr. Kapi noted.

The decision to resolve withheld results comes on the heels of WAEC's cancellation of subject results for 4,108 candidates caught engaging in dishonest practices during the exams. Additionally, 483 candidates had their entire results annulled after being found with mobile phones in the examination halls, a direct violation of WAEC's rules. "For withheld results, our examiners identified instances of collusion and sharing of information during the marking process. These cases require further investigation and hearings with the affected candidates before any decisions are made," Mr. Kapi added.

It's worth noting that withheld results are not the same as canceled results. According to WAEC, withheld results occur when candidates are being investigated for alleged involvement in examination malpractices, while canceled results are issued when a candidate is found guilty of examination malpractice.

Candidates who have had their results withheld can take steps to rectify the issue. This includes writing to the principal of their school, waiting and keeping checking if their result has been released, and registering for another WAEC examination if their result is not released after some months.

In conclusion, WAEC's proactive approach to resolving withheld results demonstrates its commitment to ensuring the integrity and fairness of its examination process. By expediting the resolution process and providing clarity on withheld results, WAEC is helping to alleviate the concerns of affected candidates and their families.
