Wayne Rooney Parts Ways with Plymouth Argyle After Seven Months
Plymouth Argyle announced on Tuesday that they have mutually parted ways with head coach Wayne Rooney after just over seven months in charge. Rooney, who joined the club in May on a three-year contract, has faced significant challenges during his tenure, with the team sitting at the bottom of the Championship table.
Under Rooney’s management, Plymouth struggled to gain momentum, failing to secure an away win this season. They currently have 18 points from 23 matches, leaving them four points adrift of safety. In total, Rooney oversaw 25 games across all competitions before the club decided to part ways.
This marks Rooney’s second managerial setback in 2024. Earlier this year, he was dismissed as head coach of Birmingham City in January after the team dropped to 20th place, having initially been in sixth when he was appointed in October 2023.
Plymouth released a statement confirming that first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell and club captain Joe Edwards would take charge for their upcoming Championship match against Bristol City on New Year’s Day.
In his statement following the departure, Rooney expressed gratitude and emotional ties to the club: “Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to look out for and take interest in their results.”
The 39-year-old former Manchester United and England forward has previously managed Derby County and Major League Soccer side DC United. Despite a promising managerial debut at Derby County, where he helped the club fight off relegation amidst financial turmoil, his recent stints in management have been challenging.
Plymouth Argyle now faces the difficult task of rebuilding their season under interim leadership as they aim to climb out of the relegation zone and secure Championship survival.
