Eric Tinkler Parts Ways with Cape Town City Amid Struggles
Eric Tinkler has stepped down as head coach of Cape Town City, becoming the second coach in the Betway Premiership to leave their position on the same day. The announcement comes as City find themselves in 12th place, just three points above the relegation zone, after a disappointing start to the season.
Tinkler’s departure follows a 1-0 home defeat to AmaZulu on Sunday, leaving City with only 11 points from 10 matches despite making several high-profile signings before the campaign. The club released a statement on Tuesday, thanking Tinkler for his contributions over the last three seasons, during which he guided the team to second, fourth, and fifth-place finishes. "Cape Town City and head coach Eric Tinkler have mutually agreed to part ways. The club expresses gratitude towards Eric... We wish him the very best for the future," the statement read.
The club also revealed plans to appoint an interim coach as they prepare for a "new project" ahead of the 2025/26 season. This decision comes at a crucial time for City, who are set to host league giants Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday and Orlando Pirates on January 8 at the Cape Town Stadium.
This marks the end of Tinkler's second stint at the club. He was Cape Town City’s first coach during their inaugural season in 2016-17, leading them to a third-place league finish and a Telkom Knockout triumph before moving to SuperSport United. He returned in 2021 after Jan Olde Reikerink’s departure and oversaw 161 matches, recording 66 wins, 49 draws, and 46 losses.
With over 354 top-flight matches under his belt, the 54-year-old Tinkler is a seasoned figure in South African football, having previously coached clubs like Wits University, Orlando Pirates, Maritzburg United, and Chippa United. His exit leaves Cape Town City searching for stability amid a challenging season.
