Eric Tinkler and Cape Town City Part Ways Amid Struggles
Cape Town City and head coach Eric Tinkler have mutually parted ways, making him the second coach in the Betway Premiership to leave his post on Tuesday. The decision comes as City sits precariously in 12th place, just three points above the relegation zone, following a disappointing start to the season.
The final blow appeared to be Sunday’s 1-0 home loss to AmaZulu, leaving the team with just 11 points from 10 matches. This poor performance is surprising, given the significant investment in new signings before the campaign began.
In a statement, Cape Town City expressed gratitude for Tinkler's contributions:
“Cape Town City and head coach Eric Tinkler have mutually agreed to part ways. The club expresses gratitude towards Eric for the last three seasons, where he presided over 2nd, 4th, and 5th place finishes. We wish Eric the very best for the future.”
The club also revealed plans to appoint an interim coach as they prepare for a new project for the 2025/26 season. Despite the team’s struggles, the timing of Tinkler’s departure is unexpected, given two upcoming high-stakes fixtures against Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at Cape Town Stadium.
This was Tinkler’s second tenure with Cape Town City, having initially taken charge in the club’s inaugural season in 2016-17, during which they won the Telkom Knockout and finished third in the league. After a stint with SuperSport United, he returned to City in 2021, overseeing 161 matches in total, with 66 wins, 49 draws, and 46 losses.
The 54-year-old Tinkler has a wealth of experience in South African football, having managed 354 top-flight games with teams like Wits University, Orlando Pirates, Maritzburg United, and Chippa United. His departure signals the end of a significant chapter for Cape Town City as they seek to rebuild and avoid relegation.
