Kyrgios Admits He Needs a ‘Miracle’ to Compete at Australian Open
Nick Kyrgios has acknowledged that his participation in the upcoming Australian Open will require a "miracle" after his first singles match in 18 months ended in defeat at the Brisbane International. The Australian tennis star, who underwent wrist reconstruction surgery during his extended layoff, faced rising French talent Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a grueling encounter.
Mpetshi Perricard, known for his powerful serve, fired 36 aces on his way to a 7-6 (7/2), 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/3) victory over Kyrgios in two and a half hours. Despite the loss, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist was optimistic about his performance, considering the circumstances.
"For me, honestly, it was a great match, considering I hadn't played in 18 months," Kyrgios said. "To put myself in a winning position was exciting."
The 29-year-old noted that his body felt good overall but admitted to lingering pain in his wrist. "Not one tennis player has ever had this surgery and come back and tried to play again," he said, describing his return to singles action as experimental.
Kyrgios, who also played doubles with Novak Djokovic earlier in the week, expressed uncertainty about how his wrist would respond to the rigors of a Grand Slam. The Australian Open begins on January 12, and Kyrgios is unsure if his body can withstand the demands of multiple matches.
"I almost need a miracle, and I need the stars to align for my wrist to hold up in a Grand Slam," he admitted. "Today, if this was a Grand Slam, we may still be out on court, and I don't know how I’d pull up the next day or the day after."
While Kyrgios remains hopeful, his comments underscore the challenges he faces as he works to recover fully and rediscover his best form on the court.
