Raducanu Withdraws from Auckland Classic with Back Injury
Emma Raducanu’s preparations for the Australian Open suffered a setback as the former US Open champion withdrew from the Auckland Classic on Tuesday due to a "back niggle." The injury forces Raducanu, ranked 56th in the world, to focus on rehabilitation in Melbourne ahead of the year's first Grand Slam, starting January 12.
The 22-year-old British star has struggled with injuries since her stunning victory at the 2021 US Open. Reflecting on her withdrawal, Raducanu expressed disappointment. "I've tried my best to be ready. I love Auckland and the fans here," she said. "But unfortunately I've picked up a back niggle and I won't be ready in time."
Raducanu has enlisted the help of renowned fitness coach Yutaka Nakamura to enhance her physical resilience. This comes after a challenging 2023, during which she underwent wrist and ankle surgeries and missed two months due to a foot injury.
The Auckland Classic also saw the withdrawal of Elise Mertens, a former Australian Open semifinalist, hours before her first-round match.
Meanwhile, top seed Madison Keys began her season with a confident 6-4, 6-4 victory over Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti despite blustery conditions. Keys, ranked 21st globally, acknowledged the early-season nerves but praised her opponent. "Lucia is one of those players who's just going to make you keep on having to play shots," Keys said.
Keys will face unseeded Romanian Jaqueline Cristian in the second round after Cristian’s Ukrainian opponent, Yuliia Starodubtseva, retired during their match.
Additionally, former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin marked a strong start to her campaign, defeating China’s Wang Xiyu 7-6(7/5), 6-1 to secure a spot in the second round.
Raducanu’s injury adds to the uncertainties surrounding her return to form, as fans hope for a strong showing at the Australian Open.
