Social media commentator Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has admitted that his recent claim of a ₦180 million theft from his NGO account was a fabrication designed to "teach people a lesson."

In a video shared on his Instagram on Tuesday, VDM confessed that the entire incident was staged to highlight the dangers of sharing unverified information. He explained that it was an intentional effort to demonstrate the lack of scrutiny given to media reports.
“This whole thing with the ₦180 million was done deliberately to show how foolish people are,” VDM stated. “We live in a country where no one bothers to check or investigate what is said in the media.”
He continued, “All I did was tell my website team to shut it down. Let’s use these people to have some fun, to teach them a lesson because most of you are dumb. It’s clear that many of you are extremely foolish.”
VDM also questioned why people didn't demand proof when he initially claimed the money was missing. “Did I show you any details of the account when I said ₦180 million was missing?” he asked.
The social media personality also commented on the Nigerian entertainment industry, stating that controversy is often used to drive success. “To make it in music or movies these days, you have to create controversy. That’s how bad the media is.”
He urged his followers to question narratives and ask for proof before spreading information, criticizing the eagerness with which people consume negative news. “You people are so excited by bad news that you don’t even stop to analyze anything anymore. This is why the media is corrupted,” he said.
VDM addressed criticisms of his actions, particularly a claim that he had misrepresented a taxi driver as a police officer. He refuted this, stating, “I never called that guy a police officer. Go back to my video and show me where I said he was. I said I was travelling with Officer Sam. An officer can be from any force—Air Force, Navy, Civil Defence, or even Task Force.”
He also challenged another claim regarding France setting up a military base in Nigeria, saying, “Show me proof that France is building a military base in Nigeria. No one will be able to prove that.”
Reaffirming his point about the dangers of spreading unverified stories, VDM added, “Different stories will spread because you people don’t use your brains. The media can easily manipulate you.”
In a follow-up video, he revealed the bank statement for the NGO account, showing a balance of ₦240 million as of December 31, with no transactions on the day he posted about the alleged theft. “No money was lost,” he clarified. “The e-bank statement will show the full balance. There’s ₦240 million in this account. Nobody does this like me in Nigeria.”
Last Friday, VDM claimed that over ₦180 million was stolen from his NGO’s account in a hacking incident. By Sunday, he later revealed that ₦78 million of the stolen amount had been recovered.
