“It Can’t Even Buy A Bag Of Rice” – Senator Ndume Rejects FG’s N70,000 Minimum Wage

Senator Ali Ndume has rejected the proposed N70,000 minimum wage, describing it as grossly inadequate to address the rising cost of living in Nigeria. Speaking in Borno South, Ndume highlighted the harsh economic realities faced by Nigerians, particularly the soaring prices of essential commodities ¹.

Ndume's criticism of the minimum wage is rooted in the stark reality of Nigeria's economic situation. A 50kg bag of rice now costs over N100,000, and a 100kg bag of beans sells for N200,000. In this context, the proposed minimum wage of N70,000 seems meager, and Ndume's assertion that it "can't even buy a bag of rice" is a damning indictment of the government's economic policies.

The senator's concerns extend beyond the minimum wage, as he also expressed alarm about the skyrocketing cost of fuel. Prices have surged from approximately N200 per litre to between N970 and N1,200 in various parts of the country. This has a ripple effect on the entire economy, exacerbating the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.

Ndume is advocating for a renewed focus on agriculture as a sustainable solution to the nation's food crisis. He believes that encouraging local production and reducing reliance on imports is the only way out of this crisis. By promoting agriculture, the government can create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and improve food security.

Ndume also voiced his opposition to the new tax reforms proposed by President Bola Tinubu, urging traditional leaders in his constituency to resist them. He argued that these reforms would exacerbate the suffering of the populace and emphasized the need for more targeted investments in food production and agricultural development.

In conclusion, Senator Ndume's rejection of the proposed minimum wage highlights the need for a more sustainable and equitable economic policy in Nigeria. The government must prioritize policies that directly address the immediate needs of Nigerians, such as creating sustainable solutions to inflation, food insecurity, and the cost of living. By doing so, the government can restore hope and confidence in the economy, and ensure a better future for all Nigerians.
