Barcelona Lose Another Appeal to Register Dani Olmo Amid Wage Cap Struggles

Barcelona have suffered another setback in their efforts to register Spanish international Dani Olmo for the remainder of the season. On Monday, the Court of First Instance number 47 in Barcelona upheld a prior ruling rejecting the club's request for Olmo’s provisional registration.

Barcelona signed Olmo in August for approximately €55 million ($57.22 million), but the club's inability to comply with LaLiga’s stringent wage cap meant the attacking midfielder was only registered for the first half of the season. That temporary arrangement, which was facilitated by reallocating wages from sidelined players, is set to expire at the end of December.

The Commercial Court number 10 of Barcelona had already dismissed the club’s plea for precautionary registration last Friday. LaLiga defended the rejection, citing that none of the prerequisites for granting such a measure were met. The league also reaffirmed the authority of its Delegate Commission in enforcing financial regulations, a stance Barcelona has not formally contested.

The initial refusal to register Olmo came from LaLiga’s Budget Validation Body and was subsequently upheld by the Financial Fair Play Committee, the Social Appeals Committee, and UEFA’s Second Instance Licensing Committee under the Spanish Football Federation.

Now, Barcelona face a race against time to resolve the situation before the registration deadline. Reports in Spanish media suggest the club plans to generate funds through the sale of VIP boxes at the Camp Nou stadium, a move projected to bring in over €100 million. However, such a strategy would require LaLiga’s approval, adding another layer of complexity to the issue.

Barcelona, currently third in LaLiga and three points behind leaders Atletico Madrid, face a challenging period as they prepare for a Copa del Rey round-of-32 clash against fourth-tier Barbastro on Saturday. With time running out, the Catalan giants must quickly find a solution to retain Olmo's services for the second half of the season.
