Djokovic Plans to Play for ‘Years to Come,’ Targets More Titles
Novak Djokovic revealed on Sunday that he intends to continue his illustrious tennis career for "years to come," despite facing increasing competition from the new generation of players led by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. The 37-year-old Serbian tennis icon expressed his determination to get his ranking back to where he believes it should be, following a relatively disappointing 2024 season in which he failed to win a Grand Slam title and only secured one tournament victory – Olympic gold in Paris.
As Djokovic prepares for the Brisbane International, he is focused on a strong start to the 2025 season. The 24-time Grand Slam champion, who has slipped to No. 7 in the world rankings, emphasized his desire for greater consistency and to compete in more tournaments than he did last year. "I'm looking for a good start to the season, I'm looking for more consistency across all the tournaments," Djokovic said. "Hopefully I will win a few more tournaments and my ranking will go up to where it should be."
The Serbian’s comments come at a time when he is navigating a new phase in his career, with the retirements of longtime rivals Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray, and Roger Federer’s retirement in 2022. With the "Big Four" now reduced to one, Djokovic is looking to maintain his place at the top, while younger stars like Sinner and Alcaraz rise to prominence. Djokovic, who has set his sights on winning his 11th Australian Open title and a record 25th Grand Slam, insisted that retirement is not on his mind as he approaches his 38th birthday in May. "The way I'm feeling today, I still think that I can go strong for years to come," he affirmed.
While Djokovic is eager to continue his quest for more titles, he also recognizes the unpredictable nature of motivation. He stated, "How long I’m going to feel motivated to keep going is unpredictable, but I still love this sport and I still love competing."
Djokovic will begin his Brisbane International campaign against Australian wildcard Rinky Hijikata, marking his first official tournament since his loss to Sinner in the 2024 Shanghai Masters final. The Serb will also play doubles alongside Nick Kyrgios, who is returning to competitive action after a lengthy absence due to knee, foot, and wrist injuries.
