JUSAG Pushes for Salary Review, Threatens Action Over Delays

The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has urged the government to hasten the approval of salary adjustments for its members. JUSAG stated that the Judicial Council has completed its recommendations for revised salaries and allowances, which have been forwarded to President Nana Akufo-Addo in line with Article 149 of the Constitution. In a statement issued on December 31, 2024, the association acknowledged President Akufo-Addo's directive to Parliament to deliberate on the budgets of the Judicial Service, Parliamentary Service, and Audit Service, which include provisions for compensations. While this directive was seen as a step forward, JUSAG emphasized the need for faster action to ensure their members’ financial welfare is addressed without further delays.

Despite reassurances that the salary review is receiving attention at the highest levels, JUSAG expressed concern over the slow pace of the process. The association revealed that its National Executive Council (NEC) has written to Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, urging her to intervene and speed up the approval. According to JUSAG, as of December 30, the President had referred the Judicial Council’s recommendations to the Minister of Finance for a status update. While this development was noted, JUSAG maintained that the delay in finalizing the review has left its members in a state of uncertainty. The association warned that prolonged inaction could harm staff morale and disrupt the judiciary's smooth functioning.

To address potential setbacks, JUSAG announced plans to implement industrial action strategies if the government fails to approve and implement the new salary structure promptly. The association highlighted its readiness to activate these measures to protect its members’ interests. “We are closely monitoring progress, but if there are undue delays, we will take decisive steps,” JUSAG cautioned. This ultimatum underscores the urgency of resolving the salary review to maintain the efficiency of Ghana’s judicial system and ensure its staff receives the compensation they deserve.
