Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has openly dismissed any speculations about his intentions to run for president in the upcoming 2028 elections. Speaking to the press after a high-level New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Accra, the former Minister and Vice Presidential candidate made it clear that his focus lies elsewhere.
In a moment that carried both political weight and emotional sincerity, NAPO stated that he is not interested in leading the party as its presidential candidate. Instead, he emphasised the urgent need for party unity as the NPP recovers from its recent electoral defeat. His words echoed a man driven by purpose rather than personal ambition, reinforcing his commitment to healing internal divisions and positioning the party for success.
“My immediate interest now is to get a united party for a flagbearer to be eventually crowned. Me, personally, I am not running in 2028,” he stated firmly. It was a moment that revealed not just his current political stance but his understanding of the delicate state of the party following the 2024 elections.
The NEC meeting, hosted at the Alisa Hotel, brought together some of the most influential figures within the NPP, including former President Nana Akufo-Addo and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. It served as a platform to review the party's post-election strategy and address concerns surrounding its performance and internal challenges.
A 12-member committee, led by Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, presented findings aimed at dissecting the party’s loss and charting a new path forward. Though the details of the report were not publicly disclosed, the meeting signalled a serious attempt to recalibrate and rebuild from within.
In a lighter yet controversial twist, NAPO also made headlines recently after Ghanaian comedian OB Amponsah shared that the politician threatened legal action against him over jokes made during a stand-up routine. OB, undeterred, turned the buzz into promotional gold, encouraging fans to stream the show where the jokes were made. The tension between political figures and entertainers continues to draw public curiosity, adding another layer of interest to NAPO’s media presence.
While the spotlight remains on who the NPP’s next flagbearer will be, NAPO’s decision not to run adds intrigue to the unfolding political narrative. His statement was more than a political move—it was a calculated signal of loyalty to party structure and a call for collective action over individual ambition.
