Sundowns and Pirates Eye African Champions League Progress

The African Champions League group stages enter a critical phase this weekend as teams compete in the fourth round of fixtures, with South African clubs Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates looking to boost their chances of advancing to the quarterfinals.

Group A: Al Hilal Defying Odds

Sudan’s Al Hilal, exiled to Mauritania due to ongoing conflict, could become the first team to secure a quarterfinal spot with a win against Mouloudia Alger in Nouakchott on Sunday. Al Hilal, unbeaten in three games, secured a surprise 1-0 win over MC Alger in their last encounter, leading to the dismissal of Alger’s coach Patrice Beaumelle.

Meanwhile, Tanzania’s Young Africans host TP Mazembe in Dar-es-Salaam on Saturday, both seeking their first group stage victories. Yanga, fresh off a run of high-scoring domestic games, aim to build momentum after earning their first group point last month.

**Group B: Sundowns Face Tough Test**

Mamelodi Sundowns, joint group leaders with Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces on five points, face a challenging away fixture against Raja Casablanca on Saturday. Raja, struggling domestically after a managerial change, host the match at Casablanca’s Stade Larbi Zaouli, where pitch conditions may influence play.

Royal Armed Forces, also on five points, host Congo’s Maniema Union in Meknes. Sundowns, under new coach Miguel Cardoso, have been in fine form, winning their last three domestic games without conceding.

Group C: Al Ahly Dominates, Pirates Seek Win

Reigning champions Al Ahly travel to Algeria to face Chabab Belouizdad, looking to build on their 6-1 home win and secure their place in the quarterfinals. Pirates host Ivorian newcomers Stade Abidjan at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday. After a frustrating draw in Abidjan, the Buccaneers are determined to capitalize on home advantage to stay unbeaten.

Group D: Pyramids vs. Esperance Showdown

The top-of-the-table clash between Egypt’s Pyramids and Tunisia’s Esperance in Cairo highlights Group D action. Esperance, three points clear, defeated Pyramids 2-0 in December but face a tough away test. The group’s other match sees Djoliba of Mali visit Angola’s Sagrada Esperança, with both teams still searching for their first points.

As the race for quarterfinal spots heats up, every point matters for teams vying to keep their Champions League dreams alive.
