Justin Langer Named London Spirit Head Coach in The Hundred
Former Australia coach Justin Langer has been appointed head coach of the London Spirit men’s team in England’s Hundred competition. Langer takes over from compatriot Trevor Bayliss, who departed after two lackluster seasons, leaving the Spirit with just three wins during his tenure.
Langer, 54, brings a wealth of experience to the role. A former opening batsman, he represented Australia in over 100 Tests and later coached the national side from 2018 to 2022. Under his guidance, Australia won two Ashes series and claimed the 2021 T20 World Cup title. Beyond international cricket, Langer has been successful in domestic competitions, coaching the Perth Scorchers to Big Bash League titles and currently serving as head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League.
In his first remarks as Spirit coach, Langer expressed enthusiasm about joining the Hundred. “I’m thrilled to be appointed to this role with London Spirit, and I’m excited to experience The Hundred. I’m looking forward to being a part of the tournament later this year and working with such a talented group of players and coaches,” he said.
The Hundred, a competition where each team faces 100 balls per innings, has been both innovative and contentious. Its unique format has attracted a younger audience but has also drawn criticism from traditional English cricket fans, as it excludes the 18 first-class counties that form the backbone of domestic cricket.
