Dyche Unfazed by Maupay's Mockery Amid Everton's Struggles
Everton manager Sean Dyche has brushed off comments made by on-loan forward Neal Maupay, who appeared to mock the club on social media following their 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest last Sunday. Maupay, currently on loan at Marseille and nearing the end of his Everton contract, wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "Whenever I'm having a bad day, I just check the Everton score and smile."
The 28-year-old forward, who last played for Everton in a League Cup win over Doncaster in August 2023, has struggled since his arrival at Goodison Park. Despite still being an Everton player, his jibe has caused a stir among fans. However, Dyche remained unfazed when addressing the issue in a press conference ahead of Everton's crucial match against Bournemouth on Saturday.
"I think it's fair to say there is a bigger picture to Everton Football Club that I am focusing on," Dyche said. "I don't think I need to be too worried about his comments." When asked about potential disciplinary action, the manager dismissed the notion, emphasizing that the club's current priorities lie elsewhere.
Everton's Pressing Concerns
With Everton just two points above the relegation zone, Dyche's focus is firmly on securing the club's Premier League survival. Despite the recent takeover by the US-based Friedkin Group, Everton's financial constraints under the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules leave little room for significant January reinforcements. The club also faces pressure to retain striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin amid rumors of interest from Italian side Atalanta.
"There has been no contact from anyone," Dyche confirmed regarding Calvert-Lewin. "Rumors are natural, but as there’s been no contact, there’s no need for discussion."
Dyche acknowledged the limitations on potential signings, adding, "There are financial parameters. The one thing it's unlikely to be is hundreds of millions of pounds, whether you have got it or not – and our owners are pretty wealthy."
With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Dyche's task of steering Everton to safety remains a formidable challenge.
