Ruud van Nistelrooy Identifies January Transfer Priorities to Boost Leicester Survival Bid
Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has outlined the club's pressing need to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window as they fight to avoid relegation from the Premier League. The Foxes currently sit second from bottom, two points adrift of safety, after a string of poor results in December.
Van Nistelrooy, appointed just over a month ago, saw an initial bright start to his tenure overshadowed by four consecutive defeats, including a humbling 3-0 loss at home to Wolves. However, competitive performances against league leaders Liverpool and defending champions Manchester City have offered some encouragement.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s clash with Aston Villa, the 48-year-old Dutchman revealed how December's matches helped him and the club's board identify key areas for improvement.
“When I came in, we reassessed the current squad, and I wanted to use December to get to know the players better,” Van Nistelrooy said during a pre-match press conference. “We are aligned on our priorities for the January window and clear about the positions we need to strengthen. The performances last month have given me a clear view of where we need help.”
While declining to disclose specific targets, Van Nistelrooy emphasized the importance of discretion in the club's transfer dealings. “It’s important to keep those plans behind closed doors so we don’t weaken our position in negotiations,” he added.
Leicester’s immediate challenge comes in the form of Aston Villa, who will be without the suspended Jhon Duran and Morgan Rogers, while Pau Torres is also a doubt. However, Van Nistelrooy warned against underestimating their opponents, noting the likely return of key players Leon Bailey and Tyrone Mings.
“They have a deep squad with two top players in every position,” he said. “We need to be fully prepared for what will undoubtedly be a tough match.”
The Foxes will look to turn their fortunes around as they approach a pivotal month, with Van Nistelrooy eager to reshape the squad and reignite their campaign.
