Barcelona Request Licence from RFEF Amid Pressure to Register Olmo and Pau Victor
Barcelona has applied to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) for new player licences for Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, just hours before the midnight registration deadline. This comes as the club faces mounting pressure to register both players for the remainder of the season. In its statement, Barcelona clarified that it had not requested any delay from governing bodies regarding the registration of the players.
The move follows Barcelona’s second unsuccessful appeal to register the players, after the club struggled to meet LaLiga's stringent wage cap. The club revealed that it had applied for the players' registration and emphasized that there was no request for a moratorium. “Barcelona informs that it has applied for a new license for the players Daniel Olmo and Pau Victor to the RFEF,” the club said.
Barcelona had signed Olmo from RB Leipzig in August for approximately €55 million ($57.22 million), but the attacking midfielder had only been registered for the first half of the season. The club had initially registered both Olmo and Victor after long-term injuries to other first-team players, which freed up space in the squad and allowed a portion of the players' wages to be allocated toward their registration.
However, Barcelona’s attempts to extend their registration have faced consistent hurdles, with appeals to LaLiga and judicial bodies being rejected. While Olmo and Victor will be free agents after the registration deadline, Barcelona could still meet the economic conditions necessary to re-sign them before the transfer window closes in February. However, under RFEF rules, a player cannot be registered by the same club twice in a single season, complicating matters further.
Barcelona is reportedly looking to raise funds to meet the financial requirements by selling VIP box seats at the Camp Nou stadium, potentially generating over €100 million, subject to approval from LaLiga. However, LaLiga stated that Barcelona had not provided an alternative solution that would comply with the league's financial control regulations, preventing the registration of any players as of January 2.
Currently sitting third in LaLiga, Barcelona is three points behind leaders Atletico Madrid. The club will next face Barbastro in the Copa del Rey on Saturday.
