Arteta Says Arsenal Must Keep Pressuring Liverpool for Title Challenge
Mikel Arteta believes that Arsenal must maintain consistency in the second half of the season if they are to keep the pressure on Premier League leaders Liverpool and give themselves a chance of winning their first league title since 2004. Currently sitting in third place with 36 points from 18 matches, Arsenal are nine points behind Liverpool and one point behind second-placed Nottingham Forest, who have played one more game.
In the lead-up to their match against Brentford, Arteta emphasized the importance of continuing their strong form. "It (title race) doesn’t depend on us. But we have to continue to be like a hammer, be there every day, every day," Arteta said. He added, “If someone wins all the matches, then we congratulate them and go to the next season. If they don’t – and in history, it hasn’t happened – then we will be there.”
Arsenal finished second in the Premier League in the last two seasons, but Arteta is confident that his team has shown significant progress this season. Despite setbacks such as red cards and injuries, the team has continued to perform at a high level. "We've proved that already this season, I'm sure of that," Arteta said. "If this had happened last season – the number of games we’ve played with 10 men, the injuries in the squad – for sure it would be difficult to be in the stages of the competitions we are in now."
The Spanish manager acknowledged that the team has adapted to various challenges and evolved accordingly. "The team is evolving and adapting to new circumstances and now we have another one with more games with fewer players. So let’s face it," Arteta added. Arsenal’s resilience will be tested in the upcoming matches, but Arteta remains optimistic about his side's chances to continue their pursuit of the Premier League title.
