JUSAG THREATENS INDUSTRIAL ACTION OVER DELAYED SALARY REVISIONS

The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) is calling for urgent approval of revised salaries and allowances for its members, warning that delays in implementation may lead to industrial action. According to Joseph Afotey Otu, National President of JUSAG, the Judicial Council has completed its review of the salary and allowance structure and submitted recommendations to the President for approval, as required by Article 149 of the Constitution.

However, JUSAG has expressed concern over the slow pace of the approval process, prompting the National Executive Council to petition Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to expedite the matter. As of December 30, 2024, the Presidential Palace had referred the Judicial Council's recommendations to the Minister of Finance for review.

JUSAG has emphasized that it is closely monitoring the situation and has developed a range of industrial action strategies to address any undue delays in the approval and implementation of the new salary structure. The Association has stressed that its members are eager to receive their revised salaries and allowances, which are essential for their financial well-being.

This is not the first time JUSAG has expressed concerns over salary delays. In 2021, the Association called on the government to implement revised salaries and allowances within two weeks, threatening industrial action if their demands were not met ¹. The Association has also highlighted the challenges faced by judges in receiving their allowances, with some judges having to rely on personal connections to secure payment.

The potential industrial action by JUSAG could have significant implications for the judicial system in Ghana. The Association represents a large number of judicial staff, and any disruption to their work could impact the administration of justice in the country.

In light of this, it is essential that the government prioritizes the approval and implementation of the revised salary structure for JUSAG members. This would not only address the financial concerns of judicial staff but also ensure the smooth operation of the judicial system.
