A devastating fire swept through the Kantamanto market in Central Accra on January 2, 2025, leaving many traders without shops or livelihoods. President Nana Akufo-Addo has assured these affected traders that the government will provide them with the necessary support to get back on their feet.

Speaking during his final State of the Nation Address in Parliament, President Akufo-Addo expressed his deep sadness over the incident and extended his heartfelt sympathies to the hardworking traders who lost their goods and investments. He emphasized that the government stands with them and will work closely with relevant agencies to determine the cause of the fire and provide the necessary support.

The president urged the nation to come together in compassion and solidarity to help those who have suffered losses. He emphasized the importance of extending a helping hand to fellow Ghanaians in need during this challenging time.

The fire, which started at around 1 am, ravaged the vibrant Kantamanto market, despite the efforts of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), which deployed 13 fire tenders to fight the blaze. The market was reduced to ashes, leaving traders to search through the burned remnants of their stalls in hopes of finding something valuable. Many traders had invested their entire life savings into their businesses.

In addition to providing support to the affected traders, the government has promised to investigate the cause of the fire and implement policies to prevent such disasters from happening again.

This is not the first time the government has provided support to traders affected by fire disasters. In 2020, President Akufo-Addo visited the Odawna Market after a fire outbreak and assured traders that the government would provide them with support through the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI).

The government's commitment to supporting traders affected by fire disasters is a welcome move, and it is hoped that the affected traders will receive the necessary support to get back on their feet.
