Flick Optimistic but Frustrated Over Barcelona's Financial Woes Affecting Olmo's Registration
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has expressed his frustration over the uncertainty surrounding midfielder Dani Olmo’s availability due to the club’s ongoing financial difficulties. While maintaining optimism that the situation will be resolved, Flick admitted that the issue has been a source of dissatisfaction for both the player and the team.
Barcelona, grappling with LaLiga’s strict financial rules, signed Olmo for approximately €60 million last summer but only managed to register him temporarily after defender Andreas Christensen suffered an injury. With Olmo’s initial registration expiring on December 31, 2024, the club has been unable to secure an extension, leaving the Spanish international and teammate Pau Victor ineligible to play.
"If I am honest, I was not happy about the situation, and the players are not happy about the situation," Flick said during a press conference on Friday. "But it is like it is, and we have to accept it. We are professional; we have to play football. I have to coach, and the club has to do their job."
Barcelona reportedly approached the Spanish Football Federation to grant Olmo a new license, but as of now, no alternative complying with LaLiga’s financial regulations has been presented. Flick, however, remains hopeful. "The confidence (in the club) is there. I am always positive about things, but we have to wait for the decision," he added.
Olmo, a key player in Spain’s Euro 2024 victory and one of Barcelona’s standout performers this season, has contributed five league goals since joining from RB Leipzig. Losing him would be a significant blow to the club’s ambitions, as they sit third in LaLiga and are aiming for silverware.
Barcelona will face Barbastro in the Copa del Rey on Saturday without Olmo and Victor. Flick emphasized his focus on preparing the team while trusting the club to resolve the issue. "I have the confidence in the club that they do their job, and I do my job," he concluded.
LaLiga’s stringent financial rules and Barcelona’s historical financial mismanagement have placed the club in a precarious position, risking another high-profile setback in their quest for stability and success.
