Akufo-Addo's Legacy: Transforming Ghana's Sports Infrastructure
Ghana's outgoing President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has highlighted the country's improved sports infrastructure during his tenure, showcasing the development of facilities for international competitions. In his final State of the Nation Address to Parliament, Akufo-Addo emphasized the construction of numerous AstroTurfs across the country and the rehabilitation of existing sports infrastructure as key achievements .
These efforts played a pivotal role in Ghana's successful hosting of the 13th African Games in Accra. The construction of 150 AstroTurf pitches and the rehabilitation of existing stadia have bolstered Ghana's reputation as a hub for international sports. Akufo-Addo proudly stated that Ghana successfully hosted the 2023 All African Games, despite the odds .
The 2023 African Games, held in Ghana for the first time, saw the participation of over 13,000 athletes and officials from across Africa. The Games took place from March 8 to 23, 2024, at ten venues, with Ghana securing an impressive 69 medals. The infrastructure development for the Games included a significant investment of $195 million, which funded the construction of the Borteyman Sports Complex and the completion of the University of Ghana Stadium .
The Borteyman Sports Complex, in particular, is a world-class facility that boasts multiple sports facilities, including indoor games and a standard aquatic center with a warm-up pool . The University of Ghana Sports Complex also features a 10,000-capacity stadium with a modern track for athletics competitions, a standard warm-up athletics track, and a modern Rugby Stadium .
Akufo-Addo's commitment to developing Ghana's sports infrastructure has not only enhanced the country's reputation as a sports hub but also provided opportunities for Ghanaian athletes to compete at the international level.
