President Akufo-Addo has emphasized the need for the Police administration to reassess its methods for preventing and managing post-election violence. This call to action comes after the December 7 elections, which were widely regarded as free and fair, yet still saw outbreaks of violence.
Akufo-Addo expressed concern that the prompt concession by the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, should not have led to such levels of violence. He condemned the assumption that the winning party felt emboldened to cause chaos, highlighting the need for the Police to rapidly re-examine their strategies for containing such incidents.
The outgoing President acknowledged the excellent job the Police did in supervising the electoral process but emphasized that more needs to be done to prevent post-election violence. He expressed hope that future elections will be devoid of such chaos, stating that "we would soon reach the stage where the unnecessary tensions that are simulated to accompany our elections would disappear, and elections would become simply something that we do, and do without a fuss and with flair."
Akufo-Addo's call to action is not an isolated incident. Previously, he urged the Ghana Police Service to reassess its protocols to address and mitigate prolonged post-electoral violence . The President underscored the adverse impact of violence on the nation's democratic integrity, stressing the need for peace and order to uphold Ghana's democratic credentials and ensure national stability.
The efficient and praiseworthy manner in which the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission conducted the past two elections, despite their challenges, was also commended by the President. However, the need for the Police to revamp their strategies for containing post-election violence remains a pressing concern.
As Ghana looks to the future, it is essential that the Police administration takes Akufo-Addo's call to action seriously, re-examining their methods to prevent and manage post-election violence. By doing so, Ghana can ensure that its democratic processes remain peaceful, stable, and truly reflective of the will of its people.
