The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Tanko Musah, has called on President Akufo-Addo to acknowledge the economic difficulties faced by Ghanaians under his leadership. Musah's comments came in response to Akufo-Addo's final State of the Nation Address (SONA), delivered on January 3, 2025, in Parliament.

Despite Akufo-Addo's claims of a rebounding economy, with a GDP growth rate of about 7% as of the end of 2024 and over $8 billion in gross international reserves, Musah expressed dissatisfaction with the state of the economy. He cited the high cost of living and meager earnings of workers, which have been eroded by inflation under the current administration.

Musah urged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to prioritize addressing the economic challenges facing the country. "The overwhelming support that he got to come into government cannot be lost on him, and whatever he can do to make sure that the twenty-four-hour economy in the education sector, the health sector, and all the sectors of the economy is implemented," he noted.

Musah also emphasized the need for Mahama to engage with the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and the Ghana Employers' Association (GEA) to create jobs. "The public sector is choked, so if the President doesn't go to these people, the twenty-four-hour economy will be difficult," he stated.

Furthermore, Musah advised Mahama to regularly engage with the media to receive feedback from Ghanaians. "At least every year, he should meet the media three times to get feedback. This is important because human beings can be something else," he said.

Musah's concerns about the economy are not unfounded. Ghana has been to the IMF 17 times, and the country's public debt has increased significantly under Akufo-Addo's leadership . The GNAT President's call for Akufo-Addo to acknowledge the economic challenges facing the country is a stark reminder of the need for urgent action to address the economic difficulties faced by Ghanaians.

As Mahama prepares to take office, he faces significant economic challenges. The GNAT President's advice to engage with key stakeholders, create jobs, and regularly receive feedback from Ghanaians will be crucial in addressing these challenges and improving the lives of Ghanaians.
