The family of Martin "Tiger" Bech, a former All-Ivy League kick returner for the Princeton University football team, is finding solace in their faith as they navigate the devastating loss of their loved one. Tiger, 27, was among the 14 people killed in the New Orleans terror attack on New Year's Day.
In an emotional interview, Cheri Bech, Tiger's aunt, shared how their family's faith in God is guiding them through this difficult time. "It's honestly remarkable. You know, as devastating as this is, God is so present," Cheri said. She revealed that Tiger's mother had felt as if he had been saying his goodbyes for weeks before the tragedy, which has given them a sense of peace.
Cheri's daughter's response to the news of Tiger's passing has been a beacon of hope for the family. "My daughters and I were sitting at our dinner table, and one of my daughters looked at me and said, 'Mom, you know, someone killed my cousin. And I forgive him,'" Cheri shared. This act of forgiveness is a testament to the family's strong faith and their ability to find peace in the midst of tragedy.
Tiger was an "amazing" son, sibling, and cousin, who was deeply invested in his family. He had been supporting his younger brother Jack's TCU football career and was planning to attend the 2025 NFL Draft. Cheri said that Jack knows that Tiger's presence will be with him at the draft, and the family is holding onto their faith as they navigate this difficult journey.
Cheri shared a powerful Bible scripture that has been a source of comfort for the family. "This scripture that just keeps popping up, because like I said, God just keeps showing up in just such remarkable ways. And that's Isaiah 41:10. 'Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my victorious right hand,'" Cheri quoted.
The Bech family's message of faith and forgiveness is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope. Cheri concluded by sharing a message of support and solidarity with the families of the other victims of the attack. "I want everybody to know that all the Bechs are praying for all of the other victims' families. You know, it's a difficult road, but together we can all get through it."
