Gospel music icon, Mrs. Deborah Fasoyin, known for the beloved song Odun lo sopin, has revealed that she did not compose the timeless track. In a recent interview shared by FM 365 and reported by Church Times Nigeria on Thursday, Fasoyin disclosed that the song existed long before her choir’s famous 1979 recording.

“I must confess, to this day, we don’t know who wrote the song. We only added two verses to it,” Fasoyin explained.
She clarified that the song, which translates to "the year is coming to an end," had been sung in many Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) congregations, particularly in Ibadan, during revival programmes at the end of the year. "That chorus belongs to CAC. We only added two verses," she added.
Fasoyin, speaking in Yoruba during the interview, further emphasized that the song was already widely known before her choir recorded it. "We didn’t go to any mountain to pray to get the song. It was everywhere before we recorded it," she stated.
In a 2020 interview with Sunday Scoop, Fasoyin, who led the Christ Apostolic Church Good Women Choir in Ibadan, discussed the song's translation into other Nigerian languages and related topics.
Meanwhile, online commenters have backed Fasoyin's account, with some recalling hearing Odun lo sopin as early as 1975. Many still associate Fasoyin with the song’s composition despite her consistent acknowledgements.
Her honesty has earned her praise from fans, who have lauded her transparency. Odun lo sopin, popularized by Fasoyin and her choir, remains a key part of end-of-year celebrations, inspiring prayers for divine protection, guidance, and provision as the year ends.
The song’s enduring relevance continues to resonate spiritually, making it a cherished tradition that spans generations.
Mrs.D.A. Fasoyin has numerous local and international awards to her name. Her awards include the Crystal Award, Wise Women Awards (U.K) in the Naomi category 2013, YOMAFA, PMAN’s award of the Most Evergreen song ‘Odun Nlo Sopin’ amongst others. She is a member of the Gospel Musicians Association of Nigeria (GOMAN).
