Pep Guardiola Takes Responsibility for Manchester City's Poor Run of Form

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted that he takes full responsibility for the club’s disappointing performance this season, which has seen the champions fall 14 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool. City, who have dominated English football in recent years by winning four consecutive Premier League titles and six in the past seven seasons, have been enduring their worst run in recent memory. With only two victories from their last 14 matches, Guardiola acknowledges that something has gone wrong and that the buck stops with him as the manager. Despite a 2-0 victory over Leicester, which marked only their second win in this troubling streak, Guardiola is clear that the team’s struggles reflect his own shortcomings as a leader.

Guardiola reflected on his nine years in charge of Manchester City, asserting that it is his responsibility to ensure the team remains competitive, especially after a successful period in charge that included multiple league titles. "There are many, many things involved in being a manager, and I missed something – something I am not doing well," he said, acknowledging that his failure to lift the team during this difficult period is on him. Guardiola also pointed out that when a team faces a poor run, the manager must shoulder the blame as they are the ones responsible for guiding the team through such challenges. While recognizing that injuries, such as to key player Rodri, have played a role in the team’s struggles, Guardiola remained firm in his belief that he should have found a way to secure better results despite these setbacks.

The City manager further emphasized that the team’s situation is not just a minor dip in form, as they have never experienced such a prolonged slump under his leadership before. He noted that while City has faced challenges in previous seasons, trailing behind in points early in the campaign, the current form is far worse. Guardiola admitted that he should have identified and rectified the issues affecting the team much earlier, and this failure has led to their current position. Despite the injuries, Guardiola believes that he should have done more to inspire and improve his players’ performances. As City prepares to face West Ham in their next fixture, Guardiola will be focused on turning things around, with the weight of responsibility resting firmly on his shoulders as he strives to regain the team’s winning mentality.
