Manchester United’s Ruben Amorim Reflects on Team’s Struggles

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has expressed concern over his team's poor form, highlighting the players' anxiety and fear during matches. Heading into a challenging fixture against league leaders Liverpool, Amorim’s side had endured four consecutive defeats across all competitions, including three in the Premier League. Since Amorim's appointment in November, the team has managed just two league victories and sits precariously seven points above the relegation zone. The Portuguese coach admitted that the mounting pressure is evident, even on his demeanor. "You can see in my face; compare it to when I arrived," Amorim noted, emphasizing the toll poor performances have taken on him. He acknowledged the difficulty of managing a squad struggling to deliver on the pitch, adding, “It’s harder when we don’t perform well.”

The festive period was particularly disastrous for Manchester United, suffering a 3-0 loss to Bournemouth, a 2-0 defeat at Wolves, and another 2-0 home setback against Newcastle within just eight days. The slump has put United on the verge of an unwanted record, with four consecutive league defeats in the same season—a feat last witnessed in 1979. Adding to their woes, they haven’t lost four straight games without scoring since 1909. Amorim believes the players' mental state is a significant factor, describing them as "anxious" and "afraid on the pitch." He stressed the need for leaders within the squad, singling out Harry Maguire for his resilience amid tough times. “We need the leaders to step up to help the other guys,” Amorim said, shouldering responsibility for improving team performances.

Despite the dire circumstances, Amorim remains optimistic about Manchester United’s future. While United has struggled to make an impact at Anfield—failing to score in their last five visits and not winning there since Wayne Rooney's goal in January 2016—the manager believes better days are ahead. Acknowledging the current challenges, he assured fans that success is still achievable. “I will do my best. I am giving everything to help the club, and we are going to succeed. I know it is hard to understand that in this moment, but we are going to succeed,” Amorim promised. His comments reflect a determination to turn the tide and restore the club to its former glory despite the growing skepticism surrounding their prospects this season.
