The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally filed a notice of appeal following a decision by the High Court in Accra that favored the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The court had granted the NPP’s mandamus application, compelling the Electoral Commission (EC) to finish the collation and declaration of parliamentary election results in four contentious constituencies: Tema Central, Ablekuma North, Okaikwei Central, and Techiman South. The NPP had argued that the election results from these constituencies were incomplete, and as a result, the initial declarations of winners could not stand. The court’s ruling mandates that all outstanding results must be finalized and the winners declared in these constituencies before the official conclusion of the elections.
In addition to instructing the EC to complete the collation process, the court also ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to provide adequate security to facilitate the smooth and secure completion of the electoral process. This added security measure ensures that the collation and declaration of the results proceed without interference or disruptions. The NPP has strongly supported the decision, viewing it as a crucial step toward ensuring electoral transparency and accountability. The party emphasized that the ruling reinforces the importance of a complete and fair electoral process, which is essential for maintaining the integrity of Ghana’s democracy. While the court’s decision has been widely welcomed by the NPP, it has sparked strong reactions from the NDC.
The NDC, not satisfied with the ruling, has made it clear that they intend to challenge the High Court’s decision. Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, the NDC’s Director of Legal Affairs, stated that the party had already prepared the necessary paperwork to file an appeal. Tameklo voiced his belief that the matter is far from resolved and that the NDC would continue to fight against the ruling. The NDC is adamant that the court’s decision does not represent a fair resolution to the issues at hand, and it intends to challenge the order to ensure that their concerns are fully addressed. This legal battle over the final declaration of results in the contested constituencies has created uncertainty, especially with the looming deadline for the swearing-in of new Members of Parliament. The NDC’s appeal ensures that the controversy surrounding these constituencies will continue to be a focal point in Ghana’s political landscape, with the outcome potentially affecting the composition of Parliament in the near future.
