Security Guard Remanded Over Attempted iPhone Robbery at Knife Point
A private security guard has found himself on the wrong side of the law after attempting to rob a woman of her mobile phone using a kitchen knife. The incident, which took place in the Greater Accra Region, has drawn attention due to the boldness of the act and the suspect’s subsequent admission in court.
Richmond Botwe, the accused, was arraigned before the Adentan Circuit Court after he allegedly tried to steal an iPhone 14 from a hairstylist named Tosin Adesokan at Nmai Dzorn. The phone, which is valued at GH¢15,000, was the target of Botwe's attempted robbery. During proceedings, Botwe admitted to the charge of “attempt to commit criminal offence to wit robbery,” citing financial hardship as his motivation.
“I am sorry,” Botwe told the court, expressing remorse for his actions. However, the presiding judge, Sarah Nyarkoa Nkansa, stated that his explanation did not provide a legal defence and therefore convicted him on his own plea. Sentencing has been scheduled for May 21, 2025.
According to the prosecution led by Chief Inspector Eric Abban, the complainant, Adesokan, a Nigerian national and resident of Nmai Dzorn, was going about her daily routine on April 5, 2025, when the incident occurred. At approximately 4:00 PM, Botwe, who works as a security guard in Adjiriganor, reportedly abandoned his post at Caterpillar Junction and concealed a kitchen knife in his clothing.
He proceeded to Manfanco Apartment, located near Nmai Dzorn School Junction, where he entered the compound. As Adesokan carried a bucket of water to her room, Botwe followed her, attacked her from behind with the knife, and snatched her iPhone 14. However, his attempt to flee was thwarted when Adesokan resisted and raised an alarm.
Her cries drew the attention of co-tenants who quickly intervened and managed to apprehend Botwe. They then handed him over to officers at the Nmai Dzorn Police Station. The kitchen knife used in the attack was retrieved during his arrest and is currently in police custody as evidence.
Botwe remains in remand custody as the court awaits the date for his sentencing. The case has raised further concern over the growing number of robbery attempts involving dangerous weapons and has highlighted the need for continued vigilance in residential areas.
