The race for the next Speaker of Parliament in Ghana is heating up as the 9th Parliament prepares to convene on January 7, 2025. With the dissolution of the 8th Parliament, a new Speaker and two Deputy Speakers will be elected at the first sitting, which begins at 12:05 AM.

The Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Azumah Djietro, emphasized the importance of a smooth transition for the incoming administration led by President-elect John Mahama. This process will ensure that all Members of Parliament take their oaths of office and begin work immediately.

Three potential candidates have emerged for the position of Speaker of Parliament.

*Alban Bagbin*, the current Speaker of Parliament, is widely respected for his leadership over the last four years. He is the favorite to win and may contest for the position again.

Another contender is *Kwame Asare Obeng*, popularly known as A Plus. He has been mentioned as a candidate for the position of Second Deputy Speaker. A Plus is known for his activism and outspoken views on governance and corruption. His popularity among the youth and advocacy for transparency could make him a strong contender.

*Dr. Benjamin Kunbour*, a former Attorney General, is also in the running. His legal expertise and experience in government make him a credible candidate for the Speaker position. Many view him as someone who can bring professionalism and legal insight to the role.

The Speaker's role is crucial, as they must preside over parliamentary proceedings, ensure fairness and order, and uphold the constitution. The election of the next Speaker will be a significant event in Ghana's political landscape.

Other notable candidates mentioned in the media include Valerie Sawyer, Edward Doe-Adjaho, Betty Mould-Iddrisu, and Haruna Iddrisu. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) holds a decisive majority in Parliament, which may influence the outcome of the election. This got many Ghanaians talking on social media.
