The Office of the President of Ghana has officially refuted reports that claimed President Nana Akufo-Addo had granted pardons to ten convicted individuals, including William Ato Essien, the former CEO of the defunct Capital Bank. The statement, issued by Eugene Arhin, the Director of Communications at the Presidency, strongly denied these claims, labeling them as inaccurate. The Office clarified that no pardons have been granted by the President and urged the public to disregard the misinformation circulating in the media. The confusion stemmed from a document that had been circulating, which appeared to come from the President's office, listing individuals who were supposedly pardoned, including Essien, Philip Assibit, and others.

The document that caused the confusion allegedly listed a range of convicted individuals, including those sentenced for financial crimes, narcotics offenses, and human trafficking. It specifically mentioned William Ato Essien, who had been convicted in connection with the collapse of Capital Bank, and Philip Assibit, who was convicted for causing financial loss to the State in relation to the National Youth Employment Programme. Other names on the list included individuals convicted for murder, robbery, and narcotics possession. These claims were widely circulated, leading to speculation and confusion among the public. However, the Office of the President quickly stepped in to clear up the misunderstanding, emphasizing that these reports were false and calling on the media and public to only rely on verified information directly from the government.

The timing of this clarification is significant, as the power to grant pardons lies with the President under Article 72(1) of the Constitution of Ghana. This provision grants the President the authority to offer pardons, commute sentences, or remit punishments for any criminal offenses. Despite the initial circulation of the pardon claims, the Office of the President has reassured the public that no such decisions have been made at this time. This official statement serves as a reminder to the public and media outlets to be cautious about spreading unverified information, particularly when it concerns matters of national importance. The President’s office has called for adherence to official communication channels to prevent further misinformation.
