Former National Security Minister, Kofi Totobi Quakyi, has dismissed allegations linking him to acts of violence following the 2024 General Elections. The accusations, made by Patricia Appiagyei, Member of Parliament for Asokwa, and supported by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Majority in Parliament, have sparked widespread controversy. Totobi Quakyi has not only denied the claims but also referred the matter to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for investigation, calling them baseless and politically motivated.
The controversy began when Patricia Appiagyei accused Totobi Quakyi and former National Security Coordinator Larry Gbevlo-Lartey of orchestrating violent activities linked to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). According to the MP, these acts targeted government appointees and state institutions, heightening tensions in the aftermath of the elections.
Appiagyei raised these concerns during a press briefing, where she claimed that the violence jeopardized national security. The accusations gained traction after President-elect John Dramani Mahama named an interim team, including Totobi Quakyi and Gbevlo-Lartey, to oversee national security matters before permanent appointments are made.
“These acts of thuggery and attacks on government officials reflect a dangerous trend that threatens the unity and stability of our nation,” Appiagyei stated. Her remarks were backed by the NPP Majority in Parliament, which called for a thorough investigation into the alleged incidents.
In a statement issued on January 6, 2025, Totobi Quakyi categorically denied the allegations, describing them as “false, malicious, and baseless.” He expressed his disappointment in Appiagyei’s comments, labeling them as reckless and irresponsible.
“For an Honourable Member of Parliament to make such wayward, irresponsible statements is deeply troubling and disappointing,” he said. Totobi Quakyi emphasized his unwavering commitment to Ghana’s peace and stability, pointing to his decades of public service as evidence of his dedication.
He further noted the serious implications of such accusations, stating that they could undermine post-election unity and national cohesion. “Hon. Appiagyei’s reckless accusations have grave implications for post-election unity and national cohesion,” he said.
To address the matter, Totobi Quakyi has referred the allegations to the IGP for immediate investigation. He expressed confidence in the law enforcement agencies to uncover the truth and ensure accountability.
“I have referred the matter to the Inspector General of Police for immediate investigation and look forward to appropriate steps being taken to ascertain the facts,” he stated.
The former minister also called on the NPP to desist from spreading unsubstantiated claims that could disrupt the nation’s peace. He urged all stakeholders to prioritize unity and focus on addressing the challenges facing the country.
The allegations against Totobi Quakyi have reignited political tensions in Ghana, with both the NPP and the NDC trading accusations. The NPP has called for greater scrutiny of the interim security arrangements announced by President-elect Mahama, while the NDC has defended the integrity of its appointees.
Political analysts have weighed in on the issue, with some describing the allegations as a political strategy aimed at discrediting Mahama’s administration before it officially begins. Others argue that the claims, if true, could have serious repercussions for national security and governance.
The public reaction to the allegations has been mixed. While some have criticized the NPP for making unsubstantiated claims, others have called for a transparent investigation to ensure accountability.
On social media, the debate has been intense, with supporters of both parties defending their respective positions. Many Ghanaians have called for calm and urged politicians to focus on the pressing issues facing the nation rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric.
The controversy has also drawn attention to Mahama’s interim security team, which includes Totobi Quakyi and Larry Gbevlo-Lartey. The team has been tasked with overseeing national security during the transition period, a role that has become even more critical in light of the allegations.
Critics have questioned the inclusion of individuals with strong political affiliations in the interim team, arguing that it could compromise the neutrality of security operations. However, Mahama’s supporters have defended the appointments, citing the appointees’ experience and track records.
Totobi Quakyi’s tenure as Minister for National Security is widely regarded as a period of stability and effective governance. He played a key role in managing security operations during some of Ghana’s most challenging periods, earning him respect across political divides.
In his statement, he reiterated his commitment to upholding Ghana’s peace and stability, emphasizing that his record speaks for itself. “As a former Minister for National Security, I have a vested interest in Ghana’s peace and stability. My decades of public service attest to this commitment,” he said.
As the investigation unfolds, the spotlight will remain on Totobi Quakyi and the interim security team. The outcome of the inquiry will likely have significant implications for the political landscape and the incoming administration’s credibility.
For now, Totobi Quakyi has pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation and continues to advocate for unity and stability. “I remain committed to Ghana’s peace and stability and urge all stakeholders to prioritize these values as we move forward,” he said.
The allegations have undoubtedly cast a shadow over the early days of Mahama’s presidency, but they also present an opportunity for the incoming administration to demonstrate its commitment to transparency and accountability. As Ghanaians await the results of the investigation, the hope is that the truth will prevail, paving the way for a united and prosperous nation.
