Ghana is on the cusp of a significant milestone in its democratic journey as President-elect John Dramani Mahama prepares to take the oath of office on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. The inauguration ceremony, scheduled to take place at the iconic Black Star Square in Accra, will be attended by a plethora of high-profile dignitaries, including ten heads of state, two vice presidents, one speaker of parliament, and representatives from global bodies like the Commonwealth and the African Development Bank (AfDB).
Among the notable attendees are Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kenyan President William Ruto. Delegations from the European Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom have also confirmed their participation, underscoring the significance of this event in Ghana's history.
To ensure a seamless and secure ceremony, the Black Star Square is undergoing extensive preparations. Access to the parliamentary enclave, temporarily relocated to the Square for the swearing-in, will be strictly by invitation. The Ministry of National Security has also imposed a ban on private drones within the vicinity during the ceremony, as part of heightened security measures.
According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for the Mahama Transition Team, only invited guests with valid invitation cards will be granted access to the swearing-in area. The event schedule and protocols have been carefully planned to ensure a dignified and secure ceremony. The inauguration will commence at 8:30 a.m., with guests expected to be seated promptly.
To facilitate a smooth flow of activities, key roads near the Black Star Square will be temporarily closed. Designated parking areas have been allocated, including the back of the Independence Arch, the forecourt of the State House, Access Bank Car Park, and the Ministries Area.
As Ghana prepares to welcome its new president, the inauguration ceremony serves as a testament to the country's dedication to democracy and peaceful transitions of power. John Mahama's presidency marks a significant milestone in Ghana's history, and the world will be watching as he takes the oath of office.
