Controversial social media figure, Martins Otse, also known as VDM, faced heavy criticism this week after claiming that his earlier revelation about N180 million missing from an account managed by his NGO was merely a “prank” on Nigerians.

In a social media post at the start of the week, VDM wrote: “80% of people on social media are dumb, and the whole N180m incident is a perfect example to prove it. I did it on purpose to show you how foolish you all are. No money is missing; my money is safe.”

He continued: “It’s sad how people are so eager to embrace bad news. I instructed my website guy to shut down the site and use the situation to ‘catch the cruise.’ No one bothered to ask for proof. They just ran with the story. I’m happy I did it.”

However, his comments sparked widespread outrage, with many criticizing him for downplaying a serious issue and insulting the public’s intelligence. Some even speculated that VDM might have been attempting something dubious with the funds but had to backtrack due to the public’s disbelief.

Earlier, many Nigerians, including celebrity Don Jazzy, had donated substantial sums to VDM, who claimed he would use the funds to improve public education in Nigeria.

Comedian and former Big Brother Naija contestant Dee-One stated he would file a petition with the Inspector General of Police, urging an investigation into the missing funds. He criticized VDM in a video, saying, “Do you know the panic your prank caused within the Nigerian community in Ghana? And the effect it had on Zenith Bank? VDM may be clever, but Nigerians are starting to see who he is. If you’re blessed with a platform, don’t misuse it. You already have enough enemies.”

He further demanded that VDM provide a bank statement from the time the account was opened.

Another social media user, Kola Jinadu, expressed his displeasure, saying, “VDM’s actions are highly insensitive and should be challenged. How can he joke about money donated by the public for a specific cause? He owes his donors accountability and transparency. If he wants to play pranks with his own money, that’s one thing, but not with funds meant for a public cause. That money isn’t his; he’s just entrusted with it.”

MaryJane Ocholo, another netizen, also criticized the prank, emphasizing the fear and panic it caused. “Do you realize how many people feared for their money in the banks because of this? No one should be allowed to play pranks involving money. Some people are easily alarmed, and such thoughtless jokes can cause unnecessary panic. That was distasteful.”
