Manchester United's head coach, Ruben Amorim, has expressed his frustration with the team's inconsistent performances after their 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield. Amorim believes that the players should be "really, really mad" with themselves for not showing the same level of application in every game.
United had lost their last four matches in all competitions before the Anfield draw, and Amorim admitted that they were under threat of relegation in the build-up. However, the team's improved display against Liverpool has left Amorim wondering why they cannot replicate this level of performance consistently.
"The expectations were so different to what we saw during the game," Amorim said in a post-match interview. "I get more mad because of the other games. It's even harder to understand. This is not about the system or the technique, it's about something else. It is hard to understand for me as the coach."
Amorim's frustration stems from the fact that United's players have shown that they are capable of competing with top teams like Liverpool. However, they have failed to replicate this level of performance in other games, leading to inconsistent results.
"It's a point. I think they deserve the point, but it's just one point, and I think we should get mad and disappointed – more than the other day against Newcastle," Amorim said. "More than those days, today we need to be really disappointed. I'm happy for the performance, not happy for the result, but I'm really, really mad because of the other games."
Amorim emphasized the importance of continuing to fight and be competitive in every game. He believes that if United can replicate their performance against Liverpool in every game, they can climb out of their current predicament.
"We need to fight to get out of this situation, and if we play against Liverpool every day, we will do that," Amorim said. "We have to do that against any opponent. We already proved in the other games we can do it. The way we were really competitive; that is the crucial thing going forward."
