The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has revealed that significant efforts were made to retain Nora Hauptle as the head coach of the Black Queens after her contract expired. Henry Asante Twum, the GFA Communications Director, shared that the association tried hard to reach an agreement with the Swiss coach, who led the Black Queens from 2023. Hauptle’s contract was up for renewal, and the GFA proposed a 50% salary increase in hopes of keeping her. Despite the offer, Hauptle insisted on a 100% salary increment, a demand that the GFA could not meet due to financial constraints. This salary disagreement led to her decision not to renew her contract, eventually accepting the position of head coach for Zambia’s Copper Queens under a three-year deal.
Asante Twum explained during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show that the GFA made their best efforts to secure Hauptle’s continued leadership of the Black Queens. The offer included a salary increase and discussions about an extension, but Hauptle’s desire for a 100% pay raise was simply too high for the association to agree to, considering that the GFA had been financially responsible for her wages since her appointment. While the association was open to negotiations, Hauptle, being a professional, made the decision to leave, as her contract had come to an end and she was free to explore other opportunities. This marked the end of a short but impactful tenure with the Ghanaian team.
During her time with the Black Queens, Hauptle made a significant impact on the team, most notably by guiding them to qualify for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) set to be held in Morocco. Her departure leaves a notable gap, as the Black Queens are now in need of a new head coach ahead of the tournament. The GFA now faces the challenge of appointing a new leader who can continue the work Hauptle began and prepare the team for the upcoming continental competition. As the search for a new coach intensifies, the GFA is determined to find a competent successor who can build upon Hauptle's achievements and lead the Black Queens to greater success on the international stage.
