Tchouameni joined Real Madrid in 2022, a move seen as a significant achievement for club president Florentino Perez, especially after the team outmaneuvered Liverpool to secure the French international's signature. The initial transfer fee was set at $83 million (€80 million), with the potential to reach $104 million (€100 million) based on performance-related milestones.
However, nearly three years into his tenure at the club, Tchouameni's impact has not met expectations. Earlier this season, he faced criticism from fans who booed him when his name was announced during a disappointing Champions League match against AC Milan, a team previously managed by Carlo Ancelotti. Despite his talent, many observers believe Tchouameni has struggled to establish himself as a key player in Madrid's midfield, particularly in the wake of Toni Kroos's departure.
