History: Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang Becomes Ghana's First Female Vice President
Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has etched her name in Ghana’s history as the first woman to hold the position of Vice President. Her inauguration on January 7, 2025, marked a monumental moment for gender representation in Ghanaian politics. A Trailblazer’s Journey
Born on November 22, 1951, in Cape Coast, Ghana, Professor Opoku-Agyemang is 73 years old. She is a distinguished member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and gained national prominence in 2020 when she became the first woman selected as a running mate for a major political party. Partnering with John Dramani Mahama, she contested in the presidential elections, setting a precedent for women in politics.
Her remarkable academic journey began at Anglican Girls’ Secondary School in Koforidua and continued at Aburi Presby Girls’ School. She completed her secondary education at Wesley Girls High School in Cape Coast between 1964 and 1971. In 1977, she graduated from the University of Cape Coast with a Bachelor of Education degree in English and French. Her thirst for knowledge led her to York University in Toronto, Canada, where she earned a Master’s degree in 1980 and a Doctorate in 1986.
Academic Leadership and National Representation
Professor Opoku-Agyemang has held numerous influential positions in academia. She served as the Head of the Department of English, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and Dean of Graduate Studies at the University of Cape Coast. In 2008, she became the university’s first female Vice-Chancellor, a role she held until 2012.
Her contributions extended beyond academia to the international stage. In March 2007, she represented Ghana at the United Nations Headquarters in New York during the bicentennial commemoration of the abolition of slavery, showcasing her commitment to global issues.
