A heartbreaking two-minute video circulating on the internet viewing a teacher hitting a three-year-old pupil repeatedly at Christ-Mitots School, Isawo Road, Ikorodu, Lagos surfaced on Wednesday, sparking outrage.
In the video, the teacher struck the toddler, whose name remains unknown for child protection reasons, five times during a lesson on writing numbers in the 60s.
The teacher instructed the child to write the numbers 61 and 62, punctuating her guidance with physical punishment.
“It is like this. Write,” she said, hitting the child.
“Write six for me. Write. Six. Six,” she continued.
“Like this, six like this. Like this. Now your one. Six. One. Sixty-one. Write.”
Another strike followed.
“Six, it is like this. Like this,” she said, slapping the child again.
“Your two… Six. Two. Sixty-two. Write. Like this… Like this, that is six.”
The video has since prompted widespread condemnation, with calls for action against the teacher.
