Free SHS Program Hits Snag: Eastern Region Schools Face Food Shortages, CHASS Cries Out
The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has raised concerns about the severe food shortages facing senior high schools in the Eastern region. Peter Atta Gyamfi, Regional Chairman of CHASS and Headmaster of Pentecost Senior High School (PENSEC), revealed that most schools in the region are struggling to feed students due to inadequate food supplies.
According to Gyamfi, the schools are supposed to receive 18 food items as part of the Free Senior High School (SHS) program, but most institutions have not received the full complement of supplies. This has resulted in a significant challenge for school administrators, who are struggling to provide meals for their students.
Gyamfi noted that PENSEC has managed to secure food supplies for the next two weeks, thanks to support from the Church of Pentecost. However, he emphasized that the situation is dire in other schools, and urgent action is needed to address the food shortages.
The CHASS Regional Chairman appealed to parents to support the government's efforts by providing some food items for their children. He explained that this would help alleviate the pressure on schools and ensure that students receive the nutrition they need to focus on their studies.
The food shortages in Eastern region schools are the latest challenge to hit the Free SHS program, which has been plagued by implementation issues since its introduction. The program, which aims to provide free education to senior high school students, has been criticized for its inadequacies, including insufficient funding, poor infrastructure, and inadequate supplies.
As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to the food shortages and other challenges facing the Free SHS program. One thing is clear, however: urgent action is needed to ensure that students receive the education and support they need to succeed.
