Ghana's President, John Dramani Mahama, has reassured citizens that his administration is committed to resolving the country's energy sector challenges and preventing looming power outages. The President acknowledged the threat of blackouts, known locally as "dumsor," and attributed the situation to the previous administration's failure to make adequate provisions for the planned maintenance exercise on the West Africa Gas Pipeline.
To address the issue, President Mahama has constituted a technical committee to draft a comprehensive plan. The committee will focus on finding innovative solutions to ensure a stable power supply. The President emphasized that his government would prioritize solutions over excuses, stating, "You elected us to solve the problems, not to put the blame on anybody else or to shoulder you with those problems."
President Mahama also highlighted the need for provision of fuel, including light crude oil, heavy fuel oil, and distillate fuel, to forestall blackouts. He expressed concern that the previous administration had not made sufficient provisions for the pigging exercise, which was originally scheduled for October 2024.
In addition to addressing the power crisis, President Mahama reiterated his commitment to empowering the justice system to address systemic inequalities in the country. He pledged to work tirelessly to ensure that every Ghanaian is treated with dignity and afforded equal protection under the law.
To achieve this, the President plans to advance the stalled constitutional review process by establishing a committee to plan a national constitutional review validation conference. He also reaffirmed his campaign promise to hold a National Education Review Conference aimed at improving the Free Senior High School (SHS) program.
President Mahama's assurance comes amid growing concerns over Ghana's energy sector. The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has urged the new administration to act decisively to avert an impending energy crisis. With the President's commitment to addressing the power crisis and promoting equality and justice, Ghanaians can expect a more stable and equitable future .
