Stella Nwadigbo, a teacher at Christ Mitot School, has pleaded not guilty to charges of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm during a session at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

She was arraigned by the Lagos State Police Command on Thursday after being filmed assaulting a three-year-old student.

Nwadigbo, who resides in the Isawo area of Ikorodu, Lagos, was accused of the offence, which reportedly took place on January 7 at Christ Mitot School in Ikorodu.

Prosecutor ASP Raji Akeem informed the court that Nwadigbo was seen on camera hitting the child with slaps and blows while attempting to teach him how to write numerals.

The prosecutor stated that her actions violated Sections 135 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Chief Magistrate O. Kushanu granted the defendant bail in the amount of N200,000, with two sureties who must each provide a bond of equal value.

The case was adjourned to February 18 for mention.

Meanwhile: A heartbreaking two-minute video circulating on the internet viewing a teacher hitting a three-year-old pupil repeatedly at Christ-Mitots School, Isawo Road, Ikorodu, Lagos surfaced on Wednesday, sparking outrage.

In the video, the teacher struck the toddler, whose name remains unknown for child protection reasons, five times during a lesson on writing numbers in the 60s.

The teacher instructed the child to write the numbers 61 and 62, punctuating her guidance with physical punishment.

“It is like this. Write,” she said, hitting the child.

“Write six for me. Write. Six. Six,” she continued.

“Like this, six like this. Like this. Now your one. Six. One. Sixty-one. Write.”

Another strike followed.

“Six, it is like this. Like this,” she said, slapping the child again.

“Your two… Six. Two. Sixty-two. Write. Like this… Like this, that is six.”

The video has since prompted widespread condemnation, with calls for action against the teacher.

@AyodeleToyota: “She should be arrested with the person who made the video.”

@Bartezz10: “That’s what poor man pikin dey faces from public school teachers over the years. That’s not new anyway!”

@Masqualinkus: “This is disheartening to say the least, I stopped watching after the second slap! This boy, 3 years old, could be having a difficult time in learning some simple things like my son. All these unqualified teachers. She should be arrested immediately.”

@excelentspirit: “@Princemoye1. @PoliceNG Can this be looked into please. This is beyond heart wrenching. Why??? I mean what could be the justification for her wickedness against 3 or 4 year old???

Biko… ejor… abeg this teacher and the school should be located and properly investigated. There maybe others doing the same in that school.”

@still_Ayoola: "The boy is brilliant and kudos to the teacher for doing wonderful job. Although I agree that the slap is deep but it really help the boy to grab what the teacher was teaching him. Don't condemn that woman totally, rather applaud her and correct her."
