Nnamdi Kanu Rejects FG's Request To Resume Trial, Insists On Change Of Judge

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has made it clear that he will not back down on his demand for Justice Binta Nyako to recuse herself from his case. Kanu's lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, emphasized that Justice Nyako's decision to recuse herself on September 24, 2024, remains valid and binding. This development comes after the Federal Government's request to resume Kanu's trial, which he vehemently opposes due to concerns over Justice Nyako's impartiality.

Kanu's troubles with the law began in 2015 when he was first arrested and later granted bail in 2017. However, he fled the country after a military raid on his home and was re-arrested in Kenya in 2021. Since then, he has been in detention, facing seven counts of alleged treasonable felony and terrorism. Despite pleading not guilty to all charges, Kanu's repeated applications for fresh bail have been turned down by Justice Nyako.

The IPOB leader's lack of trust in Justice Nyako stems from her failure to abide by a Supreme Court decision. During the last court session, Kanu requested that Justice Nyako recuse herself, citing a loss of confidence in her handling of the case. Although Justice Nyako agreed and forwarded the case file to the Chief Judge for reassignment, the Chief Judge returned the case to Justice Nyako, stating that she was best positioned to conclude the trial.

Kanu's insistence on Justice Nyako's recusal has sparked mixed reactions. Some commentators have praised Kanu's bravery, while others have criticized the judicial system for allowing a prisoner to dictate terms. One commenter noted, "A prisoner is giving conditions. I blame the federal government and our useless judicial system".

Despite the controversy surrounding his case, Kanu remains resolute in his demand for Justice Nyako's withdrawal. His lawyer, Ejimakor, has argued that the prosecution's attempt to resume the trial is an effort to mislead the court, emphasizing that Kanu no longer has a case before Justice Nyako.

As the drama unfolds, one thing is clear: Nnamdi Kanu will not back down on his demand for Justice Nyako's recusal. Whether or not this will impact the outcome of his trial remains to be seen. For now, the case continues to spark intense debate and speculation.
