Speaker of Parliament Alban Kingsford Bagbin has urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to join forces in combating the unfavorable views of public service in Ghana. While addressing a Thanksgiving gathering at his home in Accra on January 11, 2025, Bagbin underscored the importance of enhancing the appeal of public service by confronting corruption and other obstacles that damage its reputation.

Bagbin pointed out the challenges faced by MPs in obtaining re-election, along with the rising disenchantment with public service. He noted that the unappealing aspect of public office discourages prospective candidates from stepping forward to serve their nation. He observed that many individuals witness former MPs struggling financially, which deters upcoming leaders from seeking public office. "This situation is alarming," Bagbin stated, speaking to his fellow parliamentarians. "People are becoming intimidated by the resources and effort required to become an MP. When they see former MPs experiencing financial hardship, they begin to wonder if it is even worthwhile to pursue."

He emphasized the necessity of a unified approach to "clear away the muck" related to public service, transforming it into a profession that attracts individuals who are dedicated to serving rather than those aiming for personal gain. Bagbin additionally advocated for extensive reforms in Parliament to overhaul the system, making it more oriented towards public welfare. "It’s not only His Excellency the President, we in Parliament must also rejuvenate Ghana," he remarked. "There are several measures I need to implement, and I believe that’s part of the reason God has allowed me to serve a second term."

Bagbin's comments arise during a pivotal moment when public service and the responsibilities of MPs are being intensely examined. His appeal for reform in Parliament is a component of a wider initiative to improve governance in Ghana, ensuring it stays transparent, accountable, and dedicated to the welfare of its citizens.
